I bought this because I have tinnitus and have trouble sleeping. Several years back I bought one of those cheap little Homedics alarm clocks that can play different kinds of continuous background noise (you can choose from "white noise," "rain," "ocean waves," etc). It was useless--the sound produced was tinny, not soothing, and did not mask other noises.
The Marpac SleepMate 980 is far superior to an electronically generated sound that is played from a tinny speaker. Before buying the Marpac, I always just left a fan on all night for the sound, but didn't like having the rushing air when I didn't want air, just a soothing white noise. So I would say the Marpac is better than a fan too. However, a friend of mine who also had trouble sleeping used an air purifier to create white noise. Genius! It doesn't create a big gust of air when one isn't wanted, and yet still creates a pleasant white noise that has depth to it, unlike the annoying tinny sound of my Homedic

Follow the instructions for room placement, dial in the tone you prefer and hit the sack. It may not eliminate your resentments toward a populace deadset in expressing itself through noise, but it will let you shut them out when it's time to sleep. It's so worth it.

It's small, about the size of the fabric softener dispenser in a washing machine, lightweight, and fabulous! I've always had an extreme sensitivity to noise, so I find the Marpac Sleepmate Sound Conditioner to be a real blessing. The sound it emits is what is generally called 'white noise' but to me it's reminiscent of the nice steady hum of a fan on 'high' setting. It has a couple of sound levels which are easily adjustable (you turn the outside casing one way or another and voila! the noise level is adjusted) and it nicely blocks out common noises like barking dogs, loud voices, highway traffic, etc., that might prevent you from having a good night's rest. If you're sensitive to noise and have suffered many a sleepless night, this might be the answer to your troubles. It was for me. I am totally satisfied with this product and recommend it highly.
